Mom of a 4 month old here. 👋 We’ve been bedsharing since birth, and my baby is wakeful. She usually sleeps a 3-5 hour stretch and then wakes every hour or two for the rest of the night (and sometimes it feels like more because she can be restless).

With my first baby, I was told that I had to sleep train her in order to prioritize my sleep, and my attempt to sleep train felt so bad, and it exacerbated my postpartum anxiety. We were never “successful” at it because she was a high needs baby and couldnt be sleep trained without neglecting her needs. We began safely bedsharing when she was around 6 months and never looked back. I’ve now bedshared with all 3 of my babies, and it’s the way our family gets the most sleep.

Turns out getting quality sleep and responsive sleep are not mutually exclusive, and oftentimes, moms get the most sleep when they bedshare with their babies.

I’m sharing these real numbers to dispel the myth that you must sleep train to get enough sleep.

It’s true! Several studies of infant sleep in the first year show that most parents experience more disrupted sleep from 4-12 months of life. One study even shows that on average, the percentage of babies waking at night increases sometime between 3 and 9 months! Which means babies who were once STTN stop STTN. This is normal!

Having a baby who starts being MORE wakeful after the newborn phase can feel very isolating and even like you’re doing something wrong, or there’s something wrong with your baby. It’s common to hear about babies being sleep trained or beginning to sleep through the night after the newborn phase, but what many parents are actually experiencing is the opposite- many are experiencing newborns who sleep fairly well but then start waking more.

This is confusing! But it’s so normal.

Babies begin waking more as they get older because there is so much development and growth happening, and they are waking up to the world around them.

So if you have a baby who still needs tons of support, needs to cosleep, needs to feed or be comforted multiple times a night, know that you are not alone, and this is usually very normal.

I love seeing what other mom’s homeschooling days/routines look like, especially when they also work. I have childcare 2 afternoons a week. I use this childcare to work and to run errands/schedule appts that I can’t bring my kids to. I stopped filming after my PT appointment, but when I returned home, I got some more work done (with a fussy baby on my lap because she just wanted mom).

One of the most helpful things my husband has done since we had our our 3rd baby is taking over breakfast for the older kids in the morning. This allows me to do what I call my “self care hour”- I exercise, shower, pray, sometimes do vitamin d lamp/red light if I have time. It’s been so helpful to have that done before I have to start the day with the kids.

Time changes are TOUGH on the body. Seriously, even an hour change can cause a lot of stress and deregulate the circadian rhythm. The good news is that it usually only takes a week or two to regulate, but here’s what you can do to help your child (and yourself) deal with a disrupted sleep-wake schedule and combat early rises:

USE NATURAL LIGHT!

Go outside to see the sun rise. If your child is rising early, try to avoid any artificial lights other than maybe a red light until the sun rises. Let the sun rise be the first light exposure you and your child get, if possible.

In the evening, try to avoid bright artificial lights in the hour or two prior to bedtime. Use blue light blocking glasses if needed!

This phrase “your toddler is holding you hostage at bedtime” is one that I’ve seen a lot in the sleep training world, and it is 🗑️. It’s not you versus your child, it’s you and your child as a team. Your child is not out to get you. They are having a hard time.

When we can assess our child’s behavior to see the cause of it, we can use that information in a way that fosters closeness and relationship and understanding… and can help make bedtime more pleasant for everyone. When we can view our child’s experience through a lens of compassion and understanding, we can have a more positive perspective and meet their needs so the bedtime challenges diminish.

I get it- the toddler bedtime battles where they just keep delaying bedtime and asking for one more story, one more hug etc. They don’t want you to leave and you want to just go enjoy some “me” time! But have you considered adding in lots and lots of connection? Because that is usually what they are after. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but when we focus on connecting with our child, it often facilitates increased independence (as developmentally appropriate).

This is one of my favorite connection games to play with my children at bedtime. It fills their attachment cup, helps them feel loved and special and safe, and really goes a long way in helping end bedtime battles.
