Comment GUT TEST to learn more about the infant/child (and mom) gut health test I use for my family. They are having a major sale right now!

All of these symptoms are common, but that doesn’t make them normal. Many parents seek support for these symptoms only to be told their baby will outgrow it, or given medications to mask them.

What if parents could get to the root cause of these issues?

The gut microbiome is a relatively new field being studied, and the medical community is often 10-20 years behind on their evidence based recs.

But the evidence is currently showing us that our gut microbiome impacts nearly every area of our health. For babies, gut dysbiosis, or imbalances in the good/bad bacteria in the gut, can cause problems that are very common like colic, GI issues, and eczema.

Some factors that impact gut health: mom’s gut health (tiny health also tests moms and I’m currently implementing their recs to improve my microbiome because that will directly impact my baby), birth method, antibiotic use, feeding method and more.

Tiny Health gut testing offers easy stool testing that shows you exactly what bacteria are present in the gut and offers you individualized recommendations to improve gut health.

So many families have utilized this tool and found improvements in their child’s eczema, food intolerances, sleep, constipation, rashes, colic, and more.

(My baby won’t even have a nursery.)

I’ve learned aloottttttt about sleep, breastfeeding, and realistic expectations after having 2 high needs babies.

My priorities and how I prepare for birth and baby have shifted so much the third time around.

With my first, making sure my baby had plenty of clothes and baby gear and setting up the nursery were #1 priorities.

Now, this baby will be living in my bedroom for who knows how long, and I am making sure my bedroom is cozy and comfy with separate surface cosleeping and safe bedsharing options.

Why?

Because I know from experience that bedsharing with my baby is probably inevitable. And with my first, I put her and myself in unsafe Cosleeping situations (like falling asleep rocking her while standing + falling asleep on the couch with her). I would never put myself in the situation again where I do not have a place to safely bedshare with my baby when I am exhausted in the middle of the night.

I also understand how important postpartum rest is and how much I don’t want to have to worry about cooking. So I will make sure to have freezer meals prepped and available. And making plans for help after baby.

Also working on my own mental health and mindset, for both birth and life with a newborn and two other children to take care. I struggle with anxiety and have struggled with postpartum depression/anxiety with both babies so it’s extra important for me to have a good mindset and a regulated nervous system as I enter this season of birth and having a newborn.

When I was pregnant with my second and planning a homebirth, I knew I wanted my daughter at the birth as long as she could handle it. So we watched peaceful birth videos together and read stories about birth and prepared her for what she might see. I also had a babysitter there just in case she couldn’t handle it or something went wrong.

But my daughter did amazing at her brother’s birth. She offered me sips of water and hugged me during contractions. She was so excited to meet her baby brother!

At not quite 3, she also knew more about birth than the average person. I remember we had an appointment for my son, and my daughter walked in and was telling everyone about mommy’s placenta and what it was for! 😂

In our home, we normalize birth as a beautiful process, not something to be scared of. And as someone who definitely grew up fearing birth and hearing birth horror stories, this approach has been so healing to my journey as a mother as well.

Breast storage capacity- a factor not often discus

Breast storage capacity- a factor not often discussed by those who are advocates for non-responsive sleep training. But it matters. Breast storage capacity is one major reason why we cannot make blanket statements and generalizations about when a baby should be able to sleep through the night without a feed.

If you have a small breast storage capacity, non-responsive sleep training is very likely to tank your supply and can be detrimental to your breastfeeding relationship. That’s not listed in the fine print though, is it?

This is such a complex topic and it’s why I don’t believe people who do not have adequate training in breastfeeding should be giving sleep/weaning advice.

I usually don’t recommend night weaning until at least 12 mo old (although some babies will really need some night feeds even beyond this- again it’s not one size fits all). Comment BEDSHEETS to get my comprehensive blog post on why we don’t need to be concerned about bedsharing negatively impacting children’s mental health + the history of communal sleeping.

Note: this isn’t commentary on solitary sleeping. I’m fine with families having sleep circumstances that work for them, as long as it’s safe (if you need safe bedsharing guidelines, comment SNUGGLES). But what I am not okay with is anti-bedsharing propaganda and making parents feel scared or nervous about providing their children the comfort and support they are asking for and need.

Sleeping in the same space as our children is normal and has even been necessary for safety and space constraints for all of human history. It is only recently that humans even have big enough homes and enough money to heat those rooms and buy individual beds for everyone. In many places around the world, cosleeping is still very much the norm.

So to be questioning whether cosleeping is harmful to our children’s mental health and development is super short sighted and western centric.

There’s no need to be concerned about this as long as you are being responsive to your child’s needs (which is what the vast majority of bedsharing parents are doing).

A lot of parents come to me believing their toddlers have sleep “issues”. This is often reinforced by the medical community who tells these parents that a child who needs support to sleep has a diagnosis and needs intervention (usually in the form of non-responsive sleep training).

But the truth is that most toddler sleep behaviors are very normal, and not actually a problem at all. It could just be that your expectations are too high.

Here are some expectation problems I often see with parents of toddlers:

😴expecting their toddler to nap for 2 hours during the day AND sleep from 7pm-7am
😴expecting their toddler to be able to fall asleep completely independently
😴expecting their toddler to always sleep through the night without any parental support

Some children might do these things, but it is not a realistic expectation for all children.

and it does not necessarily mean your child has a sleep issue.

Parents need to be re-educated on what is actually normal for toddler sleep so that they can evaluate whether their expectations are appropriate and realistic.

It is normal for:

😴toddlers to sleep less than 13-14 hours in a 24 hour period
😴 toddlers who nap to have a later bedtime
😴toddlers to need support to fall asleep
😴toddlers to wake at night
😴toddlers to nurse for comfort

Did you know that from a historical perspective, children having their own beds and rooms is a relatively new concept? People have been sleeping communally forever- out of necessity, lack of space and resources, and for safety.

And yet humans have managed to continue to be intimate and procreate. They’ve also managed to raise self sufficient, confident humans for all of this time!
