The Best Spring and Summer Barefoot Shoes for Kids

Have you ever walked through the kids’ shoe department in a store and wondered why most of the shoes have heels, or are super stiff? Maybe not, but you should think about it! Why are we essentially putting children in foot casts? Most conventional shoes limit the range of motion of our children’s feet and toes, preventing the freedom of movement they really need. Kids’ feet are still growing and forming, and the way they move every day plays a big role in that development. When feet are restricted in stiff or narrow shoes, it can change how they walk, run, and balance. Over time, that can also affect their posture and alignment through their ankles, knees, and hips. When I’m shopping for shoes, I look for 3 basic things. The shoes don’t have to be perfect, but these criteria help me decide whether I want my children running and walking around in them all day:

Wider toe box

One of the biggest things I look for is a wider toe box. Most traditional shoes taper in at the front and press the toes together, which doesn’t allow them to spread out naturally. When toes can splay the way they’re designed to, it helps with balance and stability, and gives kids a stronger foundation when they’re moving.

Flexible soles

Flexibility is just as important. A lot of shoes are stiff and don’t bend with the foot, which can limit natural movement. It almost acts like a cast, where the foot isn’t able to fully do its job. A flexible sole allows the foot to move, bend, and respond to the ground, which helps build strength and supports a more natural walking and running pattern.

Ground feel and movement

Minimal shoes tend to have thinner soles, which lets kids feel the ground beneath them a bit more. This feedback helps with coordination and awareness, especially when they’re navigating different surfaces outside.

Why this matters long term

All of these pieces work together to support healthy development and movement. When kids have space for their toes, freedom to move, and the ability to feel the ground, their bodies can move the way they’re supposed to. It supports better alignment and helps avoid some of the movement patterns that can come from restricted footwear.

Here are some great barefoot or minimalist spring and summer shoe options for children. Most of these we have used and loved in our family! Many are also cheaper or more budget friendly options.

Water shoes for babies/toddlers– Hear me out: these water “socks” are my absolute favorite shoe for beginner walkers and young toddlers because they fit my criteria, don’t fall off as much as some shoes, and they have a non slip rubber sole on the bottom, while still being flexible enough for the littlest walkers. They are also incredibly budget friendly! Around $12 for a pair of shoes that my toddler wears all summer?! Yes, please! Here’s a different water shoe style that works as well.

Ten Little Splash SandalsThese are one of our go-to shoe brands, and we love their splash sandals. These are especially nice because they are designed for water, and they dry quickly. We also love their everyday sandals.

Merrell Bare Steps Sandals– These are probably my favorite pair of kids’ sandals we’ve tried. They’re cute, and they are super durable and great for running and playing. We also love these water shoes from the same brand (can be used as regular, everyday shoes, too.)

Leather sandals- These are another great option for older toddlers. They are adorable, and can also be used as a dressier sandal, in my opinion.

Moccasin sandals for babies and toddlers– These moccasin sandals are a great option for babies and young walkers.

Rantaan Kids’ Barefoot Sandals– This option is a bit more expensive, but these are great barefoot sandals for toddlers and older children alike.

These are just a few of our favorite spring and summer barefoot shoes that we’ve tried over the years. Let me know if you have another others you love!
